How to Clean Air Fryer Basket Baked-On Grease Without Scrubbing 2026

Removing baked-on grease from an air fryer basket doesn’t require aggressive scrubbing, which can actually damage the non-stick coating. The most effective “hands-off” method uses the appliance’s own heat to break down stubborn carbonized oil.

The Heat & Soak Method

1.Create the cleaning solution:Dish soap and baking soda.

Place the empty basket in your sink. Squirt a generous amount of grease-cutting dish soap into the bottom and sprinkle about 1/4 cup of baking soda over the grates.

2.Add boiling water:Thermal activation.

Pour boiling water into the basket until the greasy areas and the rack are completely submerged. The heat from the water activates the baking soda to lift the grease.

3.The ‘Hands-Off’ soak:30–60 minutes.

Let the basket sit undisturbed. As the water cools, the surfactants in the soap and the alkalinity of the soda will penetrate the “baked-on” layers.

4.Rinse and wipe:No scrubbing needed.

Discard the murky water. Most of the grease should slide off under a hot tap. Use a soft sponge or microfiber cloth to wipe away any remaining softened residue.

Alternative: The Steam Clean Trick

If the grease is particularly thick on the heating element or the interior walls, you can use the air fryer itself to create a steam chamber.

  1. Place a small oven-safe dish with a mix of water and lemon juice inside the basket.
  2. Run the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes.
  3. The steam will loosen the grease on the walls and ceiling of the unit, allowing you to wipe it clean with a damp cloth once it cools slightly.

Pro Tip: To prevent future buildup, avoid using aerosol non-stick sprays. Many contain soy lecithin, which leaves a gummy residue that “bakes on” much harder than standard cooking oils. Use a high-smoke point oil (like avocado or light olive oil) in a dedicated pump sprayer instead.
